Last few weeks have been kind of stressful because my dad had an accident at home and it was really shocking when I learned about it. As a person with a disability, you cannot just go and take care for your loved one or just visit them when you want to. The bible mentions that we have to take care of our parents when they are old. So, how do we do that if we need help ourselves?

Dad’s Fall

A month ago, my dad was bringing up laundry from the basement and he tends to put one of his foot behind the other foot. He was near the top of the stairs and his foot did the movement. Naturally, there was nothing to put his weight on, so he fell down the stairs. He didn’t black out or anything like that. He just got up and called 911. Dad went to the hospital, and they said that he has a fractured vertebra in his neck and a torn rotator cuff.

A Blockage

They also found a blockage in his neck. If he did not have the fall, we wouldn’t know about the blockage and who knows what would happen then. God works in mysterious ways and you wonder why did He allow this accident to happen.

Rehab

My dad is in a rehabilitation center for two weeks now and he might go home soon. As I said, I cannot just go and see him whenever I want or take him to his doctor visits. Isn’t it my responsibility as a son to do that? At the same time, I know that I’m a person with a disability, so I don’t have the ability to do what I want.

Solutions

What can we do in similar situations? There are a few things that I am trying to do, and the first thing is I am trying to see him at least one time a week. Although it is difficult to get a ride there, I haven’t missed a week yet. Last week when I went there, we had a good conversation and my aide left us by ourselves. It was very good because when he used to come over, I had a lot of things that he had to fix. He could not talk and fix something. So, it is just nice to just talk.

I am finding it difficult to get updates from the doctors. Since a guy from dad’s church is taking my dad to his doctor appointments, he is not going in with dad. I am hearing everything from dad and he is 89 so I don’t think that he is remembering things as he should. To me, that is the most frustrating thing because I am hearing everything from him. When I am asking questions, he doesn’t know the answers. I cannot get angry at him because doctors often talk really fast and you don’t have a lot of time to ask questions.

Communicating

My dad is not a person who is into computers a lot. Actually, a few years ago, I gave him one of my old iPads. He learned how to message me with it. We set up the WIFI for him in the hospital and then at the rehabilitation center. We can communicate with each during the week and find out what is going on with him. It is working pretty well although he is having PT and OT every day and seeing several doctors, so he is keeping busy.

Heading Home

The tricky part of having him going home is how can I keep him safe. He said that his friend from church would come over and help dad since he is retired. I told my dad to come and stay by my place. He said that he doesn’t want to bother my aides. They all said that he would not be a problem, so I will keep trying to get him to stay here.

As a person with a disability, it is really difficult to look over our loved ones, so we have to do our best and let other people help. Although, we have to do what we can to help our loved ones. It might be difficult, but we have to do our best. For information on how to win the lotto check out Reglementierungswut im legalen Glücksspiel: Suchtprophylaxe oder Volkserziehung?
