The authors — both of whom have Cerebral Palsy — want parents to know that life with Cerebral Palsy is not hopeless and can be really rewarding. Chris and Lisa took two years to write this inspiring book, in which they offer their unique perspectives on how Cerebral Palsy has affected their lives. This candid memoir shows how they moved beyond the barriers of their disability — in spite of what they were told — to achieve their goals and become productive contributors to their communities.

“They Said We Couldn’t” is yet another testimony to the perseverance and communication skills of Lisa Cesal and Chris Lenart. From meeting Lisa as she spoke to college students in a seminar sponsored by Joni and Friends at Trinity Christian College to my introduction to Chris in his condo at Katharine Manor, I have been privileged to share in this quest to educate readers about their challenges and victories while living with and getting through the obstacles they’ve had to face living with Cerebral Palsy. As is often the case with Cerebral Palsy, the mechanics of producing quality work may take a little longer but is often more than worth the wait. I have found inspiration in Lisa’s quick wit and open honesty about everything from managing support staff to interpersonal relations including dating and love. Chris is a beautiful writer, literally using his head as he must craft words on his computer using a poking device and declaring his love of independence with a fervent desire to be self-supporting. Each of these writers has chosen not to wallow in self-pity or expect to be taken care of exclusively through the state or government funds. Rather Lisa and Chris consistently look for ways to contribute to the good of all of those with whom they come into contact.
It is my hope that you will enjoy their life stories. In sharing their experiences Lisa and Chris want to let others know that wheelchairs do not block access to accomplishments. I would further encourage you to view their YouTube contributions. Perhaps you might even invite them to come out and speak to your organization or consult with your family if you are facing similar challenges. I can assure you that talking with these amazing young adults will be even more memorable than reading their words.
